Gamma-Ray Bursts as a Probe of Cosmology
نویسندگان
چکیده
We show that, if the long GRBs are produced by the collapse of massive stars, GRBs and their afterglows may provide a powerful probe of cosmology and the early universe.

Probing the Nature of the Weakest Intergalactic Magnetic Fields with the High-Energy Emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts
We investigate the delayed, secondary GeV-TeV emission of gamma-ray bursts and its potential to probe the nature of intergalactic magnetic fields. Geometrical effects are properly taken into account for the time delay between primary high-energy photons and secondary inverse Compton photons from electron-positron pairs, which are produced in γ-γ interactions with background radiation fields and...
متن کاملLuminosities and Space Densities of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts
Using the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > as a cosmological distance indicator, we derive the isotropic-equivalent characteristic peak luminosity of gamma-ray bursts both longer and shorter than 2 s. The short bursts have essentially the same characteristic peak luminosity of 0.6 × 10 erg (0.064s) as do the long bursts. This may apply also to bursts with durations less than 0.25 s. The local spac...
متن کاملGamma-ray bursts and their links with supernovae and cosmology
Gamma-ray bursts are the most luminous explosions in the Universe, whose origin and mechanism are the focus of intense interest. They appear connected to supernova remnants from massive stars or the merger of their remnants, and their brightness makes them temporarily detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the universe. After pioneering breakthroughs from space and ground exper...
متن کاملGamma-ray bursts and cosmology.
I review the current status of the use of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as probes of the early Universe and cosmology. I describe the promise of long GRBs as probes of the high redshift (z>4) and very high redshift (z>5) Universe, and several key scientific results that have come from observations made possible by accurate, rapid localizations of these bursts by Swift. I then estimate the fraction of...
متن کاملNo Evidence of Time Dilation in Gamma-Ray Burst Data
Gamma-Ray Bursts have been observed out to very high redshifts and provide time measures that are directly related to intrinsic time scales of the burst. Einstein’s theory of relativity is quite definite that if the universe is expanding then the observed duration of these measures will increase with redshift. Thus gamma-ray burst measures should show a time dilation proportional to redshift. A...
